Often contact surfaces between electronic components and cooling elements or housings appear to be almost flat and smooth. In reality, however, there is a rule that when contacting two flat surfaces with each other, the effective contact area (without any mechanical reworking) is only 2 to 5 percent. Specifically for minimising thermal contact resistance, Fischer Elektronik has expanded its product portfolio of thermal interface material to include silicone-free gap filler. The different variants of the GEL F 15 … product group have very good thermal properties and are particularly suitable for silicone-free applications. In terms of compressibility and excellent shape adjustments, the specific properties of the GEL F 15 material bring about full and permanent filling of the induced tolerances, varying component heights and expansion coefficients in the air gaps that are produced. The natural self-adhesion of the material also allows for easy pre-assembly and residue-free dismantling. Initially, the silicone-free, UL 94 V-0 specified gap fillers will be available for 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mm material thicknesses with/without fibreglass reinforcement. Blanks, cut-outs and modifications are carried out according to customer specifications in our own film punching works.
