Thermal resistance of a heatsink

Various materials conduct heat differently. The thermal resistance is a value which indicates how well or bad a device conducts heat. The smaller the value the smaller the temperature increase. For systems in which a heatsink is used a smaller thermal resistance is an indication for an effective working.

Heatsinks are used to keep the temperature of electronic devices as low as possible to avoid an excessive temperature rise. The overheating of a device can lead to malfunction in the system or even to a destruction of single components. A heatsink with a small thermal resistance effectively helps to protect electronic devices against an overheating.

For the suitable heatsink: calculation of the thermal resistance

The thermal resistance of a heatsink is calculated in Kelvin/Watt (K/W). For the selection of the right heatsink the thermal resistance is important. Therefore it is advisable to calculate the requested thermal resistance for the demanded heatsink in advance.

You can see how to exactly calculate the thermal resistance in the technical introduction (PDF) entnehmen.

To find the suitable heatsink for your application our product pages provide a comfortable search function which leads you to the right product quickly. Please enter the requested dimensions and figures and you will receive an overview of suitable products with short product descriptions as well as the most important technical specifications.
